West Shore Road – and its continuation West Harbour Road – is a generally neglected and unattractive post-industrial part of Edinburgh.
The first section from Gypsy Brae Park is bypassed with a section of the Edinburgh Promenade.
This joins WHR incompetently –
The woman on the bike had come along the EP path and threaded her way through barriers and parked cars onto WSR.
One day there may be an off-road extension. Until then a simple cycle lane along WSR would be an improvement! Sorting out the barriers and adding a dropped kerb would be wise.
Slightly further west is the unassuming (and almost invisible) entrance to a useful path up to Caroline House and on to the Pilton Path and NEPN at the Red Bridge (all off-road.)
The road is wide enough for cycle lanes and has very little kerbside parking (there are no restrictions) so advisory cycle lanes would be easy (and cheap) to provide.
This would be of use to people on bikes ‘following the Edinburgh Promenade’ and may also encourage people to cycle to businesses along the route.
